On May 10th, on the occasion of National Leader Heydar Aliyev’s birthday, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva planted a tree on the territory of the former iodine-bromine factory in Surakhany district of Baku.
In 2018, following the instruction of the President, works were launched on the recovery of a 167 hectare-area contaminated with ground waters, oil, salt, iodine, and other wastes.
In the first stage of the project being executed here - over the course of 2018-2019 – a 67 hectare-area was cleaned off iodine-bromine and other oil-related wastes, and a drainage system was installed and a vast forest-park laid out by planting over 52 thousand different trees and shrubs on the territory. At the moment, execution of the second phase of the project is continuing in the remaining 100 hectare-portion of the area. 82 thousand trees, including Eldar pine, European olive, evergreen cypress, Arizona cypress and other evergreen tree and shrub species, are expected to be planted during the year 2020 in the restored area.
