Mehriban Aliyeva attended the 11th Annual Assembly of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors in Paris

The 11th Annual Assembly of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors was held on September 12 in Paris. First Lady of Azerbaijan, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva attended the Assembly.

First Lady of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva was greeted by UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova at the headquarters.

Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva greeted Goodwill Ambassadors of UNESCO. The Goodwill Ambassadors welcomed the First Lady of Azerbaijan warmly.

Using their authority and sphere of influence, goodwill ambassadors are supporting, in the name of UNESCO ideas, the activity of the organization across the world. By participating in concrete programs of UNESCO, they essentially contribute to projects implemented by the organization.  Goodwill Ambassadors of UNESCO are also actively participating in reduction of illiteracy in the world, and in other significant campaigns.  First Lady of Azerbaijan, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva has been following all these factors in her activity as priority issues. Just for this reason, Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva enjoys great authority all over the world as a Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

Attended by 25 goodwill ambassadors, the Assembly was opened by UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova.

Having greeted the ambassadors, Irina Bokova informed them of the projects implemented and works done during the last period. Irina Bokova told that UNESCO had always paid attention to solution of problems associated with education, public health, culture and other social spheres. The Director General mentioned that they were interested in the cooperation between states and international organizations in this direction. UNESCO Director General highly appreciated the assistance provided by First Lady of Azerbaijan, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO Mehriban Aliyeva in removing the aftermath of the natural disaster occurred some time ago in Haiti, and sincerely thanked her.

Mentioning the great importance of the regular assembly of UNESCO goodwill ambassadors, Irina Bokova informed of the inclusion of five more members in the rank of the organization’s goodwill ambassadors.

Memory of two goodwill ambassadors that had passed away during the period since the last assembly of goodwill ambassadors was revered.

Then followed speeches. UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva delivered a speech at the Assembly.

Issues associated with UNESCO’s activity and the ways of supporting the values of the organization across the world were discussed. Then UNESCO’s activity in issues such as gender equality, situation after conflicts and natural disasters, presentation of “Education for all” World report and other issues were addressed and discussions held. Moreover, participants of the Assembly touched upon the youth problems and widening the participation of citizens in strengthening peace and cross-cultural dialogue. 

It was noted that annual assembly of UNESCO goodwill ambassadors is of special importance in terms of coordinating the activity of the organization in education, public health, culture and other spheres, and defining new directions. The assembly is a significant auditorium to inform of programs and projects implemented in the same fields in our country too, as well as achievements and forthcoming tasks. Today it is known to the whole world that First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva has been doing enormous works and implementing significant projects as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador.

Interesting publications of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation were presented within the Assembly at the headquarters of UNESCO. In addition to pictures reflecting Azerbaijan’s contemporary development, here were also photos from the Qala State History and Ethnography Preserve. Moreover, catalogues of the Foundation devoted to the historical and cultural monuments, picturesque places, carpet-making art and cuisine of Azerbaijan were viewed with great interest. Publications of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation are of great significance in terms of more strongly promoting our republic’s rich culture and historical heritage as a member of the European family.
