Mahammad Fuzuli’s name has been eternally written in the Azerbaijani history as an eminent poet, thinker, translator and one of the founding fathers of the Azerbaijani literary language. After Nasimi, the best examples of Azerbaijani poetry in our mother tongue have been created by him.
Fuzuli was born in Karbala, near Baghdad, and has longed for the Homeland for his whole life.
Fuzuli wrote his works in three languages – Azerbaijani, Arabic and Farsi. His big-volume works, such as “Bengu-badeh”, “Sohbatul-asmar”, “Hafti-jam”, “Leyli and Majnun” etc., and numerous ghazals are undying monuments of the word art. He brought fame to our literature far from the Homeland. Back to those times, his works had been repeatedly printed in such big cities as Istanbul, Tabriz, Tashkent etc.
In the Oriental poetry, Fuzuli had been known as a lyrical poet, a poet of soul, and a poet of love. In his stories, he had shown his interest in science too.
Fuzuli had lived a life full of material and spiritual hardships. Although Turkish sultan Sultan Suleyman had allocated him a monthly stipend amounting to nine akhchas, he could not receive them due to bureaucracy. In connection with this, the poet wrote his “Shikayetnameh”, addressing to Sultan Suleyman, and here, criticizing the feudal government method, he says : “I said hello, they did not accept, because it was not a bribe”.
