Gavaldash

An ancient music instrument called Gavaldash is being preserved in the Gobustan Reserve. Found in Boyukdash and Jingirdagh and called Gavaldash, these stone music instruments are assessed as major invention of ancient human beings living in Gobustan. Creation of Gavaldash, a percussion music instrument, was as essential in terms of satisfying musical tastes and arranging dancing and singing ceremonies, as the invention of an arrow was for material wellbeing of tribal people.

The Gavaldash found in Jingirdagh is shaped as follows:  on two pillow-shaped large stones on a hill-slope, there is the third stone. This stone is considerably flatter than the other two lying underneath. There is a gap between the stones lying underneath and the upper one, and the air current flowing along the valley passes through this gap.

Although the shape of the Gavaldash found in Boyukdash is a little different, it is almost the same as that found in  Jingirdagh. This type of facility has always been found to be mounted in a place where there was air flow. Underneath  the large flat stone on a rock,  there was a stone pillar put from one side.  Both the stones produced sound if hit by a small piece of stone, similar to that produced by copper.

Gavaldahs was used especially for dancing and singing ceremonies. This magnificent music facility surprizes by its form and unusual sounds those visiting Gobustan.
