President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva participate in a tree-planting action in Shamakhy

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva participated, December 6, in a tree-planting action held in Shamakhy district on the occasion of the 650^th anniversary of Azerbaijani thinker and poet Imadeddin Nasimi.

650 thousand trees were planted in the country over the course of a single day, in the framework of this action, held following the initiative of Azerbaijan’s First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva.

Informing the President and the First Lady, minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev said: We launched a large-scale action in connection with planting 650 thousand trees across the country in a single day, following Mehriban khanum’s initiative. All the saplings have been grown locally, and distributed according to orders received form districts of the republic.

President Ilham Aliyev: How many trees will be planted in Shamakhy?

Mukhtar Babayev: 50 thousand in Shamakhy. By 50 thousand in Baku, Nakhchivan, and Sabirabad and Saatly districts.

President Ilham Aliyev: In how many places are trees planted in Shamakhy, just here?

Mukhtar Babayev: In 10 to 12 places in Shamakhy. The area we are holding this action is 5 hectares.

President Ilham Aliyev: What type of trees are planted?

Mukhtar Babayev: Here, mainly thuja and Eldar pine. But, as a whole, 38 types of tree have been distributed. They are basically fruit trees in order for people to benefit from.

President Ilham Aliyev: Trees must be chosen to be adequate to the districts’ climate conditions.

Mukhtar Babayev: Of course, we have taken this into account.

President Ilham Aliyev: Apparently, olive trees are planted in Absheron.

Mukhtar Babayev: In Absheron, olive and almond trees are planted generally. And here, Eldar pine, basically. Mostly, planted trees will be watered using a drip irrigation method. This system is currently being installed in Sabirabad and Shamakhy. In other places they will, for the time being, be irrigated using a traditional method.

President Ilham Aliyev: They should be looked after. On the way to here, I saw some withered trees along the road.

Mukhtar Babayev: All withered trees will definitely be replaced with new ones, and looked after. In general, the action started in the early morning. Preparation works were carried out for a few days. In all districts, these works are performed with great enthusiasm, and by the end of the day, we’ll have a report.

Head of the district’s executive authority Tahir Mammadov: 5 thousand only in this area.

Assistant to the President Anar Alakbarov: Mehriban khanum, tree-planting in this area will shape the word “Nasimi 650”.

Then, the President and the First Lady were photographed with the youth participating in the first action.

In the framework of the tree-planting action covering the whole territory of the republic in connection with the 650^th anniversary of great Azerbaijani poet Imadeddin Nasimi, 650 thousand trees of 38 types were planted in 83 cities and districts, generally. The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources developed an electronic map of the areas where trees would be planted. Necessary preparation works were carried out on the territories by city and district executive authorities. Drip irrigation systems and irrigation canals will be used while growing the trees to be planted.

Some 50 thousand trees were planted in the tree-planting action in Shamakhy. 5 thousand trees were planted in the action held at the entrance to Shamakhy city. Basically, thuja and Eldar pines were planted on this territory, taking into account the climate condition characteristic of this area. Along with some 300 Shamakhy youth and volunteers, members and volunteers of IDEA Public Association and the Regional Development Public Association of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation actively participated in the action.
